A Poem of Remembrance

The poem I just read on the English Period 5 Homepage affected me in various ways. After reading it and contemplating what I thought about it, I decided it was very bittersweet. To me, the poem was talking about when we were young children, and how summer days were full of such happiness. Thinking about this youthful happiness made me a little sad, because I miss being little and unaware of all the hatred occurring in our world today.

The moment I starting reading this poem, I thought about children running around. I thought back to all of the heartwarming and significant moments in my childhood. When the poem starting talking about watermelon, I instantly thought about my past obsession for watermelon. I thought about how I would always ask my mother for watermelon every time she went to the store. I could feel the watery and slushy bits of watermelon seeping out of my moth and onto my sticky chin.

I miss being young. I miss being so full of energy and feeling like nothing in the world could bring me down. I miss feeling as if there was no hatred in the world, as if my watermelon and me were the only thing that mattered. The young feeling of innocence is gone now, and I really miss it.

Fluoride

Some people might dissaprove because the water might start to decay teeth. Fluoride helps to an extent, but if you drink too much it could start to damage your teeth. Teeth could become even more sensitive if the fluoride starts to decay it. Also, it is possible that water might not taste as fresh with fluoride, and people want fresh water.

About a year ago, I drank bottled water with fluoride in it. Although my family said they could not taste the difference between regular water and water with fluoride, i could. I know, i’m picky. I would drink the fluoride water if i could not taste the difference. I would also be a little afraid to drink it because the fluoride could start to decay my teeth, which would be very unhealthy. All in all, I would not drink fluoride water.

There was one simple technological advance that had to be made in toothpaste in order for fluoride to be used world wide. Procter & Gamble was the very first company to discover this. They paired stannous fluoride with calcium pyrophosphate. This new discovery first came out in Crest toothpaste. The next discovery was by Ozark.

There are many side effects of fluoride in water that concerns me. Fluoride in water damages the immune system by not allowing white blood cells to infected areas. In 1984, an issue of Clinical Toxicology listed that fluoride is more poisonous than lead and just slightly less poisonous than arsenic. It has been used as a pesticide for mice, rats and and other small creatures. I would not want to be consuming a liquid that is used for killing animals.
